The Opium Eaters

"While reading Harold’s remarkable- Opium Eaters- which happens to be the final novel to the three part saga (One Way to Pakistan, Oath of Vengeance and Opium Eaters), I was quite taken by his depth of knowledge of Muslim Culture.
In fact in the third novel Opium Eaters Harold showed how opium provides funds for the Taliban’s war against America and their imposition of democracy on Afghanistan. It reveals the frustrations of the Americans who are unable to destroy the opium smuggling from the root source- the tribal areas of Afghanistan to the Ports of Pakistan.
“His books…a marvelous read…show us a world we generally get to read about but rarely are a part of.”

- Deepti Lamba, editor for Desicritics, Things that Bang

An Oath of Vengeance

"In his new novel, An Oath of Vengeance, Harold Bergsma weaves a literary web which snares genre-junkies, mystery-lovers and hopeless romantics. Like its prequel One Way “to Pakistan, this novel is rich with insights to the cultures of Bergsma’s youth in the Punjab of Pakistan and India. Through the tales of American AID mission-workers, corrupt Pakistani bureaucrats, captive women imprisoned behind high walls and rigid religious idealists of Pakistan, Bergsma delivers an elaborate understanding of the Pathan code, Zar, Zan, Zamin, the components of honor in this Islamic culture—a culture which is set to have a profound impact on Americans in this century. While the first pages crawl through the eccentricity of a foreign land while revealing Bergsma’s love and passion for his childhood homeland, the last three quarters of this novel force the reader into page-turning. This novel’s erratic plotline and scandalously intriguing characters will leave readers yearning for book three to hit the shelves.”

One Way to Pakistan

"Harold Bergsma takes us behind the headlines to a world where Muslims and Christians are all too human. Using powerful images of three abductions, he weaves a tale which is engaging and passionately written and causes us to care deeply about his characters and fates. Fascinating, thought-provoking and sympathetic, this novel is an important contribution to both global and multicultural understanding."

-Elaine Jarchow, Ph.D., Dean, Author: Preparing to Teach Global Perspectives
